Chapter 2: The Quiet House

That night, the girls barely spoke.

They sat together on the living room couch in the house I had raised Rose in. Lucy held her mother’s old notebook against her chest like it was something precious. Rachel stared at the wall. April clutched her stuffed rabbit and refused to let go of my hand.

I made them dinner, but no one ate much.

Later, when I was putting April to bed, she whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“Grandpa… Mommy said if anything happened to her, we had to keep the notebook safe. She said Daddy would try to throw it away.”

I sat on the edge of the bed.

“What’s in the notebook, sweetheart?”

April looked toward the door to make sure her sisters weren’t listening.

“Everything,” she whispered. “Mommy wrote everything Daddy did.”

Before I could ask more, Lucy appeared in the doorway. She looked at her little sister, then at me.

“We need to show you something,” she said.

Rachel stood behind her, holding a small black recorder.

That night, in the quiet living room, my granddaughters revealed what they had been hiding.

Rose had known for a long time that Arthur was cheating. She had also known he was becoming more controlling and sometimes violent. She had started writing everything down. She had also recorded several arguments.

And she had left one final envelope.

An envelope the girls were only supposed to open if Arthur tried to abandon them.

Lucy looked at me with eyes far too serious for a twelve-year-old.

“Grandpa,” she said, “we’re not going to let him win.”
