Chapter 11: The Desperate Plea

Ryan showed up at Claire’s apartment on a Wednesday evening.

She had just finished a long day at work when the doorbell rang. When she checked the peephole, she saw him standing outside, looking disheveled. His usually perfect hair was messy, and his eyes were bloodshot. He was holding a bouquet of flowers that looked like they had been bought in a rush.

Claire didn’t open the door immediately.

Instead, she stood there for a long moment, staring at him through the peephole. This was the man she had loved for eight years. The man she had built a life with. The man who had looked her in the eyes and lied to her for months.

She took a deep breath and opened the door.

Ryan’s face lit up with hope the moment he saw her.

“Claire,” he said quickly. “Thank God. I’ve been trying to reach you for days. Can we talk? Please?”

Claire didn’t invite him inside. She stood in the doorway, arms crossed.

“There’s nothing left to talk about, Ryan,” she said calmly. “Everything that needed to be said was said on that plane.”

Ryan stepped forward, desperation clear in his voice.

“I made a mistake. A huge mistake. Chloe… it didn’t mean anything. I was stressed, I was stupid, and I let things go too far. But I still love you. We can fix this.”

Claire looked at him without blinking.

“You called her your wife,” she said quietly. “In front of a flight attendant. While I was sitting in economy class on the same plane.”

Ryan’s face crumpled.

“I panicked,” he said. “I didn’t know what to say. Claire, please. I’m losing everything. My job is hanging by a thread. The company is investigating me. I can’t lose you too.”

For a brief moment, Claire felt a flicker of pity.

But it disappeared almost immediately.

“You already lost me,” she said. “The moment you chose to build a life with another woman while still married to me.”

Ryan’s eyes filled with tears.

“I’ll end things with Chloe,” he said quickly. “I’ll do whatever you want. Therapy, counseling, anything. Just don’t do this. Don’t throw away eight years.”

Claire studied him for a long moment.

Then she spoke, her voice steady and cold.

“You didn’t throw away eight years when you were sleeping with your secretary. You didn’t throw away eight years when you lied to me every week about where you were. And you didn’t throw away eight years when you spent company money on your affair.”

She took a small step back.

“You only started caring about those eight years when you realized you were about to lose everything.”

Ryan opened his mouth to argue, but Claire raised a hand.

“Don’t,” she said. “I’m not interested in your explanations anymore. My lawyer will be in touch. If you have anything else to say, say it to him.”

She started to close the door.

Ryan suddenly reached out and grabbed the doorframe.

“Claire, wait—”

She looked at him one last time.

“If you ever show up here again without my permission,” she said quietly, “I will call the police. We’re done, Ryan. Completely done.”

Then she closed the door and locked it.

She stood there for several minutes, listening to the sound of Ryan’s footsteps eventually fading down the hallway.

Only then did she allow herself to cry.
