Chapter 14: The Quiet Aftermath

In the weeks following the divorce, Claire focused on rebuilding her life.
She threw herself into work, taking on new projects and staying late at the office. She redecorated the apartment, removing everything that reminded her of Ryan. She started seeing a therapist twice a month to process everything she had been through.
Some days were harder than others.
There were nights when she lay awake wondering what she could have done differently. There were moments when she missed the version of Ryan she had fallen in love with — the charming, attentive man who had once made her feel like the center of his world.
But those moments grew fewer as time passed.
One evening, Lena came over with wine and takeout. They sat on the couch together, and Lena asked the question Claire had been avoiding.
“Do you think you’ll ever get married again?”
Claire was quiet for a long time.
“I don’t know,” she finally said. “Right now, I’m not sure I want to. I spent eight years building a life with someone who was living a completely different one behind my back. I think I need to learn how to be alone first. Really alone.”
Lena nodded, understanding.
“You don’t have to figure it all out right now,” she said. “You’ve been through hell. Give yourself time.”
Claire smiled faintly.
“I’m trying.”
That night, after Lena left, Claire stood on her balcony and looked out at the city. The air was cold, but she didn’t go back inside.
For the first time in months, she felt something close to peace.
Not happiness yet.

But peace.
And that was enough for now.
