Chapter 6: The Denver Arrival

Claire walked through Denver International Airport with her carry-on rolling behind her and the folder Marcus had sent tucked under her arm. The cold air outside hit her the moment she stepped out of the terminal. She pulled her coat tighter and got into the waiting car that her company had arranged.

She didn’t cry during the ride to the hotel.

Instead, she opened the folder and began reading the documents Marcus had prepared. Divorce papers. Requests for financial disclosure. A preliminary list of questions about Ryan’s company expenses. Everything was clean, professional, and ruthless.

When she reached her hotel room, she dropped her bag on the bed and immediately called Marcus.

“I’m here,” she said as soon as he picked up. “I’ve looked over the documents.”

“Good,” Marcus replied. “How are you holding up?”

Claire sat down on the edge of the bed and stared at the city lights outside her window.

“I’m fine,” she said. “I just want to move forward as quickly as possible.”

Marcus was quiet for a moment before speaking again.

“Claire, I need to ask you something important. Are you sure you want to go after his company this aggressively? Ryan’s employer is a large logistics firm. If we start digging into financial misconduct, this could get very ugly, very fast.”

Claire didn’t hesitate.

“I’m sure,” she said. “He used company resources to fund his affair. He traveled with Chloe on what he claimed were business trips. He charged dinners, hotels, and gifts to his corporate card. I want all of it documented.”

Marcus sighed, but his voice was respectful.

“Understood. I’ll have my team start pulling records tomorrow. In the meantime, I’ve already sent a formal notice to Ryan’s lawyer. He’ll be served with the divorce papers within the next forty-eight hours.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Thank you, Marcus.”

After ending the call, she sat in silence for a long time.

She thought about Ryan’s face when he saw her on the plane. The panic in his eyes. The way Chloe had looked like she wanted to disappear into the seat.

Part of her still couldn’t believe this was real.

Eight years of marriage. Countless shared memories. Promises they had made to each other. And it had all ended at 30,000 feet because Ryan couldn’t even be bothered to hide his affair properly.

Claire stood up and walked to the window.

She wasn’t going to let this break her.

She had worked too hard and sacrificed too much to let Ryan destroy the life she had built.
