Chapter 7: The Desperate Messages

Ryan tried to contact her again that night.

Since Claire had blocked his number, he started using other numbers — his work phone, a friend’s phone, even a number she didn’t recognize. She ignored every call and deleted every message without reading them.

Around 10 p.m., he sent her an email.

Subject: Please talk to me

Claire,

I know you’re angry, and you have every right to be. But what you saw on the plane isn’t what you think. Chloe and I… it’s complicated. I never meant for things to go this far. Can we please talk? Just the two of us. I’ll explain everything.

I still love you.

Ryan

Claire read the email twice, then deleted it.

She didn’t feel anger anymore. She felt something much colder — disappointment mixed with a strange sense of clarity.

Ryan still thought he could talk his way out of this. He still believed that if he said the right words, she would forgive him and go back to being the understanding wife who looked the other way.

He didn’t understand that the woman he married no longer existed.

The next morning, Claire received another message — this time from Chloe.

Chloe: Claire, I’m so sorry. I never wanted to hurt you. Ryan told me you two were having problems. He said you were separated. I swear I didn’t know you were still together.

Claire stared at the message for a long time.

Then she replied with only four words.

Claire: Save it for the lawyers.

She blocked Chloe’s number immediately after.

By midday, Ryan had escalated. He started calling her office. Her assistant, Sarah, came into her temporary Denver office looking uncomfortable.

“Claire,” Sarah said hesitantly, “Ryan has called three times this morning. He says it’s urgent. Should I keep telling him you’re in meetings?”

Claire looked up from her laptop.

“Yes,” she said calmly. “And from now on, if he calls the office, tell him all communication needs to go through my lawyer. I don’t want to speak to him directly.”

Sarah nodded, clearly relieved.

As Sarah left the room, Claire leaned back in her chair and closed her eyes.

Ryan was starting to panic.

And panic made people careless.

She was counting on it.
