Chapter 5: The Landing

The rest of the flight passed in a strange, suspended silence.
Ryan didn’t try to approach her. He stayed in first class, occasionally whispering urgently to Chloe, who looked like she was on the verge of tears. Claire didn’t look at them again. She simply stared out the window, her mind already working through the next steps.
When the plane finally landed in Denver, Claire was one of the first to stand up. She grabbed her carry-on and walked off the plane without looking back.
As she stepped into the terminal, she saw a man in a dark suit waiting near the gate. He approached her as soon as she exited.
“Mrs. Morgan?” he asked quietly. “Mr. Hale sent me. I have the initial documents for you to review.”
Claire nodded and took the folder from him.
“Thank you,” she said. “Tell Marcus I’ll call him after I’ve looked everything over.”
The man nodded and disappeared into the crowd.
Claire stood there for a moment, holding the folder that contained the beginning of the end of her marriage.
Her phone buzzed.
It was a message from Ryan.
Ryan: Claire, please. We need to talk. This isn’t what it looks like.
Claire stared at the message for several seconds.
Then she typed a reply.
Claire: You’re right. It’s worse than it looks.
She blocked his number immediately after.
As she walked through the airport toward the exit, Claire felt something shift inside her.
The pain was still there, buried deep beneath the surface.
But for the first time in months, she also felt something else.
Control.
Ryan had spent the last six months lying to her, cheating on her, and treating her like she was disposable.
