Chapter 13: The Settlement
The divorce settlement was finalized on a rainy afternoon in early spring.
Claire sat across from Ryan in the conference room of Marcus’s office. It was the first time she had seen him since he showed up at her apartment. He looked thinner, older, and defeated.
His lawyer did most of the talking. Ryan barely spoke.
In the end, Claire received the apartment, the majority of their joint savings, and a significant portion of Ryan’s remaining assets as compensation for the financial misconduct during their marriage. Ryan was also required to repay the misused company funds as part of the settlement.
When everything was signed, Ryan finally looked at her.
His eyes were empty.
“I really did love you once,” he said quietly.
Claire met his gaze without flinching.
“I know,” she replied. “But it wasn’t enough.”
Ryan nodded slowly, as if he had expected that answer.
He stood up, gathered his things, and walked out of the conference room without saying goodbye.
Claire stayed seated for a long time after he left.
Marcus placed a gentle hand on her shoulder.
“It’s over,” he said. “You’re free now.”
Claire nodded.
But freedom didn’t feel the way she thought it would.
