Chapter 12: The Fall
Two weeks later, Ryan was officially fired from his company.
The internal investigation had concluded that he had misused corporate funds and violated company policy by engaging in a romantic relationship with a subordinate. His employment was terminated immediately, and he was required to repay the misused expenses.
Marcus called Claire with the news.
“They didn’t even fight it,” Marcus said. “Once they saw the evidence, they moved quickly. Ryan’s reputation in the industry is finished. No reputable logistics company will touch him after this.”
Claire was quiet for a moment.
“How is he taking it?” she asked.
“Not well,” Marcus replied. “His lawyer has been trying to negotiate a better settlement in the divorce, but he has very little leverage now. He’s also facing potential civil claims from the company.”
Claire leaned back in her chair.
She had expected to feel satisfied when she heard this news. Instead, she mostly felt tired.
Ryan had destroyed his own career. He had thrown away a good job, a solid reputation, and a comfortable life — all for an affair that had now cost him everything.
And for what?
Claire looked out the window of her office.
She didn’t feel triumphant.
She just felt ready for this chapter of her life to finally close.
“Keep pushing on the divorce,” she told Marcus. “I want it finalized as soon as possible.”
“Understood,” Marcus said. “We should be able to reach a settlement within the next month.”
After the call, Claire sat in silence for a long time.
She thought about the woman she had been six months ago — the woman who had trusted her husband and looked the other way when things felt off. That woman was gone now.
In her place was someone stronger. Someone who had learned that silence could be more powerful than confrontation, and that sometimes the best revenge was simply refusing to let someone destroy you.
She picked up her phone and sent a message to Lena.
Claire: Ryan got fired today.
Lena replied almost immediately.
Lena: Good. He deserved it. How are you feeling?

Claire: Relieved. And a little sad. But mostly ready to move on.
