Chapter 3: The Woman They Underestimated

Claire Morgan had never been the type of woman people underestimated twice.

She had grown up in a modest neighborhood in Boston. Her father had worked as a construction foreman, and her mother had been a schoolteacher. From a young age, Claire learned the value of hard work and discipline. She put herself through college, earned an MBA, and climbed the corporate ladder through sheer determination and competence.

By thirty-two, she was one of the youngest Operations Directors in her company’s history. She was known for being calm under pressure, detail-oriented, and fair but firm with her team.

Ryan, on the other hand, had always been more charming than driven. He was good at sales — charismatic, quick-witted, and excellent at building relationships. When they first met at a networking event, Claire had been drawn to his easy confidence and warmth.

Their early years of marriage had been good. They traveled often, supported each other’s careers, and built what looked like a perfect life from the outside.

But over time, Ryan had grown comfortable.

He began relying on Claire’s success more than his own. He enjoyed the lifestyle her salary provided — the nice apartment, the expensive cars, the vacations. While Claire worked long hours and took on more responsibility, Ryan spent more time entertaining clients and traveling.

Claire had told herself it was fine. They were a team.

She had been wrong.

Now, sitting on that plane, she realized just how much she had been carrying alone.

Ryan had been living a double life. While Claire was working late and handling crises at work, he had been building a relationship with his secretary. He had been lying to her face for months — telling her he was in Portland while he was actually flying to Denver with Chloe.

And the worst part?

He had done it with complete confidence.

He never expected to get caught.

Claire looked out the window at the clouds below. Thirty thousand feet in the air, her marriage had officially ended.

But she wasn’t going to let Ryan walk away cleanly.

She had worked too hard and sacrificed too much to let him destroy her life and then simply move on to the next woman.

Claire opened her phone again and stared at the contact name on her screen.

She had one chance to make this count.

She took a deep breath and pressed call.
