Chapter 9: The Return Home

Claire finished her work in Denver by Friday afternoon and flew back to Boston that evening.

She didn’t tell Ryan she was coming home.

When she arrived at their apartment, she found the place exactly as she had left it — except for one thing.

Ryan’s clothes were gone from the closet.

He had already moved out.

Claire stood in the middle of the bedroom for a long time, staring at the empty space where his suits used to hang. The sight should have hurt more than it did.

Instead, she felt relief.

She walked into the living room and sat down on the couch. For the first time in days, she allowed herself to feel the full weight of what had happened.

Her marriage was over.

The life she had built with Ryan was gone.

And she was completely alone.

Tears finally came, but they were quiet. She didn’t sob. She simply sat there and let them fall.

After a while, she wiped her face and picked up her phone.

She had one more thing to do before she could truly begin moving forward.

She opened her messages and sent a text to her best friend, Lena.

Claire: Can you come over? I need to tell you something.

Lena replied within minutes.

Lena: I’ll be there in twenty minutes. Do you need wine or ice cream?

Claire smiled faintly despite everything.

Claire: Both.

When Lena arrived, Claire told her everything — the flight, seeing Ryan and Chloe together, the phone call to Marcus, and the evidence they were gathering.

Lena listened without interrupting. When Claire finished, she reached over and squeezed her hand.

“I’m so sorry, Claire,” she said softly. “But I’m also proud of you. Most people would have fallen apart. You’re already fighting back.”

Claire looked down at her hands.

“I don’t feel strong,” she admitted. “I feel tired. And angry. And… empty.”

Lena nodded.

“That’s normal. But you’re not alone in this. And you’re not going to let him win.”

Claire met her friend’s eyes.

“No,” she said quietly. “I’m not.”
