Chapter 12: The Reckoning
The final confrontation took place at Leonard Hale’s office.
Reagan and Carter arrived with their lawyer, looking confident at first. But their expressions changed the moment Leonard placed the toxicology report and the new will on the table.
Finnley sat across from them, calm but cold.
“I know what you did,” he said, looking directly at Reagan. “You didn’t just steal from my father. You made sure he wouldn’t recover.”
Reagan’s face turned pale, but she quickly tried to recover.
“You have no proof of that,” she said sharply.
“I have the medical records,” Finnley replied. “And I spoke with the doctor who treated him. He also found it strange how fast my father declined.”
Carter slammed his hand on the table.
“This is ridiculous! You’re just trying to destroy us because you went to prison!”
Finnley looked at his stepbrother without emotion.
“No, Carter. I went to prison because you stole from the company and framed me. I have the bank records and the fake invoices with your name all over them.”
Carter’s face turned red with anger, but he didn’t speak.
Leonard continued in a steady voice.
“We are prepared to take this to court. However, if you agree to return everything you took and sign an agreement to stay away from Finnley permanently, he is willing to settle without pressing criminal charges for fraud and theft.”
Reagan looked at her son. For the first time, she seemed truly afraid.
After a long silence, she finally spoke.
“…What do you want?”
