Chapter 4: The Hidden Threat

By the next morning, Adrian had already set things in motion.
He brought in a new security team — people he trusted completely. He also hired a private investigator to dig into Marcus Hale’s background and anyone who might have been working with him.
While Lena rested, Adrian sat beside her bed reviewing files on his laptop. Every so often, he would glance over at Sophia, his expression softening.
Lena watched him quietly.
She had spent eight months believing that Adrian’s world was too dangerous for their child. But now, seeing the way he looked at Sophia, she realized something else.
Adrian wasn’t the danger.
The danger was the people hiding inside his world.
Later that afternoon, Adrian received a call. He stepped out into the hallway to answer it. When he returned a few minutes later, his face was grim.
“They found something,” he said.
Lena sat up carefully.
“What is it?”
“Marcus Hale has been receiving large payments from an offshore account for the past ten months. The account is linked to a company that has been trying to take over one of my subsidiaries for over a year.”
Lena felt a chill.
“So this isn’t just about us,” she said. “It’s about your business.”
Adrian nodded.
“Someone wants to weaken me. They thought the easiest way was through my wife… and my child.”
He looked at her, his blue eyes intense.
“I should have protected you better,” he said. “I should have seen this coming.”
Lena reached out and took his hand.
“You didn’t know,” she said softly. “Neither of us did.”
Adrian squeezed her hand gently.
“I know now,” he said. “And I’m going to end this. Whoever is behind this is going to regret ever coming after my family.”
Lena looked at their sleeping daughter, then back at Adrian.
For the first time since she had run away, she felt something she hadn’t felt in a long time.
Hope.
Whatever was coming next, she wouldn’t have to face it alone.
Adrian Whitmore was no longer just the powerful man she had once loved.
