Chapter 13: The Legal Battle
The legal process moved faster than expected.
With strong evidence from the storage unit and the new will, the court quickly accepted Finnley as the rightful heir. Reagan and Carter were forced to return the house and most of the assets they had taken.
At the same time, Finnley filed a civil lawsuit to recover the stolen money. The evidence against Carter was overwhelming. Several bank transfers and fake invoices clearly showed his involvement.
During the court hearing, Finnley finally got the chance to clear his name.
The judge reviewed all the documents and ruled that there was no credible evidence linking Finnley to the theft. The original charges against him were officially dismissed.
For the first time in three years, Finnley was no longer seen as a criminal.
When the hearing ended, Reagan and Carter walked out of the courtroom without looking at him. Their lawyer followed behind, looking defeated.
Finnley stood outside the courthouse for a long time after they left.
He had won.
He had gotten his freedom back. He had gotten the house and the company back. But the victory felt bittersweet.
His father was still gone.
And even though he now had justice, nothing could bring Camden Dennis back.
Still, as Finnley looked up at the sky, he felt a quiet sense of peace.
