Chapter 5: The Investigation
After presenting the new will, Finnley knew he couldn’t stop there. He needed more than just documents — he needed answers.
The biggest question in his mind was about his father’s death. Reagan had told everyone that Camden died of cancer, but the toxicology report Finnley found in the storage unit told a different story. There were substances in his father’s system that shouldn’t have been there.
Finnley decided to dig deeper.
He started by visiting the small clinic his father used to go to. The doctor who had treated Camden had already retired, but Finnley managed to speak with one of the nurses who had worked there for many years.
When he mentioned his father’s name, the nurse’s expression changed.
“Mr. Dennis was a good man,” she said quietly. “He was getting better, you know. The treatment was working. Then suddenly, he got much worse in just a few weeks.”
Finnley leaned forward.
“Did anything seem strange to you?”
The nurse hesitated, then nodded.
“His medication was changed near the end. I remember because I thought it was odd. The new medication made him weaker instead of stronger. When I asked about it, I was told it was a new treatment plan from another doctor. But I never saw any records from that doctor.”
Finnley felt his stomach tighten.
“Do you remember who changed the medication?”
The nurse shook her head.
“No. But your stepmother was the one who came in to handle all his medical paperwork during that time.”
Finnley thanked her and left the clinic with a heavy feeling in his chest.

He now had more reason to believe that his father’s death wasn’t natural. Someone had made sure Camden Dennis didn’t recover.
And that someone was most likely Reagan.
