Chapter 2: The Hospital

The ride to the hospital was a blur of pain and flashing lights.
Adrian stayed with her the entire time. He held her hand in the ambulance, his grip firm but careful. When another contraction hit, he spoke to her in a low, steady voice, telling her to breathe, telling her he was there.
Lena had spent eight months convincing herself that Adrian Whitmore was too dangerous to be part of their child’s life. But right now, with his hand wrapped around hers and his voice anchoring her through the pain, she felt something she hadn’t allowed herself to feel in a long time.
Safe.
They rushed her into a private room the moment they arrived. Doctors and nurses moved quickly around her. Adrian never left her side. He stood right next to the bed, one hand still holding hers, the other resting lightly on her shoulder.
When the doctor finally examined her, his expression was serious.
“The baby is in distress,” he said. “We need to deliver now.”
Lena’s heart pounded.
“It’s too early,” she whispered.
“We’ll do everything we can,” the doctor replied.
Adrian leaned down so only she could hear him.
“You’re not doing this alone,” he said. “I’m staying right here.”
Lena looked at him through the pain. For the first time since she had run away, she allowed herself to really see him — not the powerful billionaire the world feared, but the man who had once stayed up with her until 3 a.m. just because she couldn’t sleep.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I’m scared,” she admitted.
Adrian’s thumb brushed over her knuckles.
“So am I,” he said honestly. “But we’re going to get through this.”
The next few hours passed in a haze of pain, voices, and movement. Lena held onto Adrian’s hand like it was the only thing keeping her grounded. He never let go. Not once.
When the baby’s first cry finally filled the room, Lena broke down in tears.
A few minutes later, a nurse carefully placed their daughter in her arms.
She was small — too small — but she was breathing. Her tiny fingers curled around Lena’s thumb.
Adrian stood beside the bed, staring at the baby with an expression Lena had never seen on his face before.
Complete wonder.
He reached out slowly and touched the baby’s tiny hand.
“She’s beautiful,” he whispered.
Lena looked up at him through her tears.
“Her name is Sophia,” she said softly. “Sophia Elena Whitmore.”
Adrian’s eyes met hers.
“You gave her my last name.”
Lena nodded.
“I never wanted to take that from her.”
For a long moment, Adrian didn’t speak. He just looked at their daughter, then back at Lena.
Then he leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss to Lena’s forehead.
“Thank you,” he said, his voice rough. “For keeping her safe.”
Lena closed her eyes, letting herself rest against him for the first time in eight months.
